The Canadian Dental Association (CDA) is Canada’s premier organization of dentists and dental professionals. Its members believe in working toward a healthier public, a strong community of oral health professionals, and advancement for the dental profession as a whole.

As dentistry is a quickly changing profession, the CDA maintains updated information for prospective dentists and dental students. It also offers resources designed to help prospective dentists decide if they are in fact interested in a career in dentistry. This includes the Dental Aptitude Test (DAT) Program, which helps current students evaluate their potential for a career in oral health.

Dental schools also use the test to help them choose students for their programs. To learn more about DAT or view upcoming examination dates, visit: www.cda-adc.ca/en/becoming/dat.

Tooth Brushing and Flossing Techniques

James Frizzell, DDS, has led an independent dental practice in Niagara Falls, Ontario, since 1993. In that time, James Frizzell, DDS, of Niagara Falls has impressed on his patients the importance of learning effective brushing techniques.

To achieve optimal oral health, you must brush not only regularly but also correctly. Dentists recommend the use of a soft-bristled brush that allows you to easily reach all areas of your mouth, including the back teeth. The brush should be no older than three to four months, although more frequent replacement may be necessary if the bristles become worn.

The brush should be held at a 45-degree angle to the gum line and should address all surfaces of the teeth, including the back and any chewing surfaces. A gentle back-and-forth motion on the outsides and tops of the teeth is the proper technique to use. For the interior of a front tooth, up-and-down strokes tend to be more effective.

Unfortunately, even the best brushing techniques can only access up to 66 percent of the tooth surface. Flossing is necessary to clean the spaces between teeth, where plaque develops and quickly hardens into tartar. To remove this plaque, as well as food particles, you must take a small length of clean floss and slide it between two teeth, then wrap it around the base of each adjacent tooth.

Like brushing, flossing must address each tooth and must involve a clean instrument. Before moving on to the next tooth, you must take up a clean section of floss. Proper technique may take more time, but it is essential to the goal of maintaining a healthy mouth.

James Frizzell, DDS, owns and operates an independent dental office in Niagara Falls, Ontario. As a dentist, Dr. James Frizzell is dedicated to offering his patients the latest treatment options and up-to-date information about oral health conditions, such as periodontal disease.

In early March of 2016, researchers from King’s College London and the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom published research that links periodontal disease with cognitive decline in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. The study took place over the course of six months and followed 59 individuals with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. At the beginning of the study, patients received a cognitive assessment and a test of inflammatory markers in the blood, as well as a dental and periodontal health exam. Patients then underwent the same procedures at the study’s end.

Data revealed that those individuals with signs of gum disease at the beginning of the study had a 600 percent higher chance of cognitive decline by the date of the six-month follow-up appointment. Researchers attribute the apparent connection to an increase in bacteria antibodies in gum tissue, which then correlate with a multi-system increase in inflammatory bodies. These inflammatory bodies have previously proven to be contributing factors to the decline of cognitive capacity in patients who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. More research is necessary to secure more data and determine whether findings indicate a causal relationship.

James Frizzell, DDS, is a Niagara Falls, Ontario-based dentist who offers a comfortable environment and provides general, cosmetic, and restorative care. Also a fan of hockey and other sports, Dr. James Frizzell, DDS, enjoys collecting sports memorabilia in his free time.

Although sports card sales have slumped in recent year, one-of-a-kind memorabilia have held their value well. In 2014, the “flu game” shoes that Michael Jordan wore during his memorable Game 5 performance in the 1997 NBA Finals were auctioned for $104,765. During that game, Jordan was seriously under the weather, yet he somehow put together a 38-point effort against the Utah Jazz before collapsing of exhaustion. One of his greatest displays of athleticism, it led the Bulls to yet another championship ring.

At that time, Jordan would wear a different pair of shoes each game. The shoes were given to the Jazz’s ball boy, partly in thanks for his procuring Jordan’s favorite pregame meal of graham crackers and applesauce.

In November 2015, this record auction price was demolished when the jersey Jordan wore at his final regular-season game with the Bulls sold for $173,240. Played in front of the Chicago home fans, the 1998 game featured a superlative 44-point effort and capped a fifth MVP season in Jordan’s career.

Psalms of the day :)

psalm of the day DR James Frizzell    …..  Frizzell Dental

1 O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. 2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising , thou understandest my thought afar off. 3 Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. 4 For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether. 5 Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high , I cannot attain unto it. 7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? 8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. 9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. 11 If I say , Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. 12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. 13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. 14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made : marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. 15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. 16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written , which in continuance were fashioned , when as yet there was none of them. 17 How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! 18 If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake , I am still with thee. 19 Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men. 20 For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain. 21 Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee? 22 I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies . 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: 24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

James Frizzell, DDS: Dental Sealants

May 26, 2012 § Leave a comment

In his Niagara Falls, Ontario, private dental practice, James Frizzell, DDS, offers an array of family dental services. With preventive, cosmetic, and restorative procedures for all ages, Dr. Frizzell helps families in Niagara Falls achieve brighter smiles. One such service Dr. Frizzell provides is dental sealants.

Dr. Frizzell protects teeth with sealants by depositing a thin, plastic coating on the chewing surfaces of the rear molars. The sealant blocks decay by preventing food particles and bacteria from settling in the grooves, which can be quite deep and difficult to reach with brushing. Dr. Frizzell typically applies sealants to permanent teeth in a simple, non-invasive process. Sealants are best applied following a thorough cleaning so no bacteria are trapped underneath. Once in place, the sealants can last 5 to 10 years, and may require reapplication. When used in conjunction with a comprehensive oral health program including regular cleanings, brushing, and flossing, sealants provide significant protection for molars.
